Sometimes, they even snowball into something bigger.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s exactly what Asher Bloom \u201924, Achish Enriquez \u201926, Peter Williams \u201925 and Ben Shafer \u201926 of Pacific&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacific.edu\/liberalarts\/academics\/departments-and-programs\/art-performance-media-design\/media-production-degree-ba\">media production program<\/a> did, taking their project, \u201cRhythm,\u201d from a short project into a full-length documentary.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now in post-production, it follows Sacramento-based drummer Floyd Kennedy as he teaches music at his church well into his retirement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team says the support of their professors and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacific.edu\/liberalarts\/academics\/departments-and-programs\/art-media-performance-design\">Department of Art, Media, Performance and Design<\/a> made the documentary possible. The department played a pivotal role, funding a trip to the annual media festival South by Southwest. There, they met professionals whose advice and support convinced them to turn \u201cRhythm\u201d into a documentary.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like many projects to come out of Pacific, the core of \u201cRhythm\u201d starts with the connections students make with each other.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learning by doing&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, Enriquez, Bloom, Williams and several other Pacific students created the EXR Film Production Collective. It served as a way to expand their work portfolios and a chance to learn from each other.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their first project was the music short film \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nTAWN_ZvW3o&amp;ab_channel=juhye\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">remember<\/a>,\u201d which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DDr0qFVv-pi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">won first place<\/a> in the Community Filmmakers category at San Joaquin Delta College\u2019s Digital Media Film Festival in 2024.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRhythm,\u201d started out in a similar vein, set to be just a few minutes long and part of Bloom\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.pacific.edu\/stocktongeneral\/collegeofthepacific\/artmediaperformanceanddesign\/#courseinventory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">senior project.<\/a> He also had personal ties to its subject.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bloom had known about Kennedy since he was young when he took drum lessons with one of Kennedy\u2019s former students. Years later, when Bloom was a student at Pacific, he started taking lessons with Kennedy directly and learned more about his life. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s had this amazing life of mentorship through teaching at Natomas High School in Sacramento, where he created a drum line from scratch and helped thousands of students throughout his 30 years there,\u201d Bloom says. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the project isn\u2019t just about Kennedy\u2019s drumming or his students\u2019 accomplishments. It\u2019s also about how his efforts as an educator have built communities. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe is not only a teacher. He\u2019s a mentor. He\u2019s a father figure,\u201d Enriquez says. \u201cAnd that\u2019s something that should be shared with everybody\u2014shared with administrators, shared with teachers\u2014to know they can make such a big impact on people\u2019s lives.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That was the spark for inspiration, a desire to celebrate the legacy of educators and mentors like Kennedy. So, the team got to work on their short project.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Turning \u201cRhythm\u201d into a documentary&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In March 2024, Pacific\u2019s media department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacific.edu\/blog\/2024\/05\/08\/media-x-students-rub-shoulders-with-film-industry-pros-at-sxsw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sent 13 students to South by Southwest<\/a>, the annual media festival in Austin, Texas. It\u2019s a chance to screen the new media, network and to get advice on projects and careers. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among those students were Enriquez and Bloom, who brought a teaser trailer for \u201cRhythm.\u201d &nbsp;Their conversations with professionals convinced them it had bigger potential. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were so inspired by all the films, all the creatives in the area and all the advice we were given about our project,\u201d Enriquez says. \u201cWe decided to increase the length, drop it as a spec ad and create a story. That really meant it could impact so many lives.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team kept filming Kennedy, even following him to the Gospel Music Workshop of America in Memphis, Tennessee. As the team worked on \u201cRhythm,\u201d they put their education to use and built up their skills. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bloom, the director and producer, says his media production degree prepared him for the technical matters, but shooting the documentary has strengthened his soft skills.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne thing I didn\u2019t know much about before starting the project was really how to interview people and how to structure a story in a way where it\u2019s digestible and understandable,\u201d he says.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enriquez, the producer, wore a lot of hats while handling on- and off-set logistics. The experience built up her leadership abilities, especially as she raised money for \u201cRhythm.\u201d She says it\u2019s also improved her skills at managing a team. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team didn\u2019t do it alone, though. Bloom and Enriquez highlight mentorship at Pacific as an essential part of the process.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mentorship that matters&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The team says Pacific faculty have offered invaluable advice about the project, often giving viewpoints from other creative perspectives.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve gotten some from my graphic design professor,\u201d Enriquez says. \u201cI\u2019ve gotten some from my adviser, from Professor Joshua Salyers. It\u2019s important to have support like that because it makes you feel like you\u2019re really creating change.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of faculty mentorship, Enriquez also highlights the opportunities the department offers to its students. This year, she\u2019ll be going to the Cannes Film Festival in France with the department.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOpportunities like that don\u2019t come easily,\u201d she says. \u201cSo, it\u2019s really great that they give those opportunities to students because it\u2019s really valuable in shaping who you are and what you want to be.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for \u201cRhythm,\u201d the team hopes to finish and release it by August of this year. They\u2019re currently working on a crowdfunding campaign to secure funds for post-production costs and hope it\u2019ll be part of the 2026 film festival circuit.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At its core is a story they hope will touch educators everywhere, regardless of whether they\u2019re still working or retired.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFloyd\u2019s story is a lot more than just drumming or gospel drumming,\u201d Bloom says. \u201cHis faith is at his core, but he\u2019s been using it to impact literally thousands of students. That\u2019s the story we\u2019re trying to tell.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>University of the Pacific emphasizes hands-on learning, so that you\u2019ll enter the job market with career-ready skills.
