Then, he&nbsp;continues&nbsp;his route.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacific.edu\/engineering\/academics\/engineering-management-degree-bs?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_content=COLIN-SCHNEIDER\">engineering management<\/a> graduate has a rare opportunity:\u00a0He\u2019s\u00a0part of the team\u00a0building the new Southwest Hall on University of the Pacific\u2019s Stockton Campus.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0a complex that will soon house\u00a0nearly 400\u00a0students.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Colin,&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;not just a project at his alma mater.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;a continuation of his&nbsp;family&nbsp;legacy&nbsp;at Pacific.&nbsp;His story is also&nbsp;a great example&nbsp;of the opportunities available to Pacific students.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Intergenerational Pacific Tigers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Colin\u2019s story at&nbsp;Pacific&nbsp;began when his parents were&nbsp;Tigers&nbsp;in the 90s.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBack in the day, they were civil engineering students here.&nbsp;They met here and actually got married at the chapel on campus,\u201d he says.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though his parents, Colin got acquainted with construction work early in life.&nbsp;His dad worked in engineering design, which really helped him understand what the field was.&nbsp;He turned that interest into field work in high school.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOver the summers, I worked on survey crews to go out and stake,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd I worked for a construction company in Elk Grove right before I came to&nbsp;Pacific.&nbsp;I really fell in love with the engineering management side of it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it came time for college, Colin was drawn to Pacific\u2019s engineering management&nbsp;major&nbsp;and its small class sizes.&nbsp;What sealed the deal was the&nbsp;program\u2019s focus on design alongside construction management.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Just get out there.&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Colin describes his ethos as, \u201cJust get out there,\u201d which he put into practice at&nbsp;Pacific. He stayed busy with summer internships, campus&nbsp;jobs&nbsp;and student clubs.&nbsp;His experience is a good example for other engineering students who are looking to build experience before they step into the working world full-time.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He\u2019s&nbsp;worked at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacific.edu\/engineering\/makerspace?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_content=COLIN-SCHNEIDER\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fletcher Jones Foundation Makerspace<\/a>&nbsp;since it opened in 2024 and even&nbsp;helped design&nbsp;the layout for the&nbsp;woodshop.&nbsp;Student&nbsp;workers&nbsp;like him are the backbone of the center. They get to apply their knowledge in a hands-on setting and help other&nbsp;students&nbsp;understand and use the tools available to them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve&nbsp;enjoyed helping students&nbsp;fulfill their ideas, like getting them into 3D modeling and then 3D printing it for their senior project. They just come in and say, \u2018Hey, I have this idea. I want to build this.\u2019&nbsp;We\u2019re&nbsp;there to help them,\u201d he says.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over\u00a0the\u00a0summers, Colin interned\u00a0in Sacramento to help build a\u00a016-story,\u00a0$3.7\u00a0billion\u00a0\u00a0health\u00a0care\u00a0building, the California Tower.\u00a0He\u00a0originally got the internship himself,\u00a0but it later turned into his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacific.edu\/engineering\/cooperative-education-program?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_content=COLIN-SCHNEIDER\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cooperative Education<\/a>\u00a0experience,\u00a0a\u00a0required, paid internship for engineering students. \u00a0Four years in,\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0seen it go from a pile of dirt to an entire structure.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside of paid work, Colin also got involved with Pacific\u2019s chapter of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.asce.org\/communities\/find-a-group\/regions\/region-9\/ca-sacramento-section\/university-of-the-pacific\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Society of Civil Engineers.<\/a>&nbsp;Each&nbsp;year,&nbsp;the chapter takes part in the ASCE Mid-Pacific Student&nbsp;Symposium. The event challenges&nbsp;participants to&nbsp;tackle&nbsp;several challenges. Students&nbsp;put their creativity and problem-solving skills into action.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe past two years,&nbsp;I\u2019ve&nbsp;been the captain of the steel bridge team.&nbsp;Actually&nbsp;getting to build and design a mini bridge to hold weight has been&nbsp;really interesting,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With such a busy schedule, Colin gives a lot of credit to his advisors, Professors Abel&nbsp;Fernandez&nbsp;and Medhi&nbsp;Khazaeli. With&nbsp;small class sizes, professors like&nbsp;his&nbsp;are able to spend more quality time with students.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey both helped me through my journey. Whether it was picking classes or asking them, \u2018Hey, I have this problem,\u2019 or even going to them for personal things. I have a strong personal connection with them,\u201d he says.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A new Southwest Hall for the Stockton Campus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Southwest Hall&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacific.edu\/pacific-newsroom\/new-southwest-hall-will-reflect-best-past-and-future?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_content=COLIN-SCHNEIDER\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stood on campus for just over a century<\/a>&nbsp;before&nbsp;the current rebuild. The project strives to&nbsp;maintain&nbsp;Pacific\u2019s distinctive,&nbsp;red brick&nbsp;feel, preserving architectural details from the original 1924 building.&nbsp;But students who live there will experience modern benefits in an energy-efficient residence hall.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among his other jobs, Colin also works for\u00a0Stockton-based\u00a0Siegfried Engineering.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0responsible for\u00a0the civil\u00a0engineering and survey engineering at the site, which is why he visits\u00a0the construction site\u00a0every Friday.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy job is to do something called a SWPPP report, a Solid Waste Protection Prevention Plan.\u00a0Basically, I\u00a0do weekly inspections.\u00a0I make sure no dust, dirt or anything gets in the storm drains. They\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0want\u00a0anything going in\u00a0there, because\u00a0that directly feeds into the\u00a0Delta.\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0here to\u00a0monitor\u00a0that, take photos and\u00a0write\u00a0reports,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Colin himself never lived in the prior Southwest&nbsp;Hall,&nbsp;but&nbsp;he knows people who did.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo, hearing their stories and getting to see the new rendering, it makes me happy,\u201d he says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A new chapter at Pacific<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although&nbsp;he&nbsp;just graduated, Colin\u2019s not going anywhere just yet.&nbsp;He\u2019s&nbsp;going directly into Pacific\u2019s Master of Science in engineering. After that, he wants to work for a construction management company and, eventually, start his own.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For other students who want to follow in his&nbsp;steps, Colin has a simple piece of advice.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;the same one that led him to work so many different jobs on and off campus: \u201cGet out there.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf&nbsp;you\u2019re&nbsp;interested in the work, be&nbsp;<em>interested&nbsp;<\/em>in the work.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;not just about your grades.&nbsp;Be curious, ask a lot of questions.&nbsp;Go to career fairs and find internships. Talk to your&nbsp;professors.
